“An interview can be defined as a face to face verbal interchange in which one person, the interviewer, attempts to elicit information or expressions of opinion or belief from another person or persons”. The interviewing method was followed here. Michael Dunn in describing the strengths of interview argues that interview method is the most suited method to fill in a gap in knowledge that other methods such as observation or survey data collection might not be able to fulfill. Applying this to the current research context, the interview method is more useful than any other. For identifying relationships between food services here and for the inhabitants in space, secondary research data could have been sought. However, secondary research data are minimal and they might not always be current or cutting edge data such as that would be available with the direct experts. Secondly, a survey method where a questionnaire can be mailed out would not have worked for two reasons. Primarily, the investigator might not have been able to gain the full attention and the interest of the interviewee, so maximum information cannot be collected.
Secondly, although, the interviewer has conducted much research data collection and analysis, might still be a novice in the field. So the interviewer might not be able to exactly pinpoint a theme or concept to query to the subject matter experts. Dunn argues that diversity of meaning and experiences can be obtained only in the interview. Since as the main researcher, I have already collected the secondary data on the subject, I now need primary data on the subject. Secondary data, researcher opinions and more are often overlapping and primary data collected would gave a fresher, more current insight into the problem. In the context of open ended versus closed ended questions, the approach used here is an open ended questioning. An open ended question will enable the subject matter expert to talk more on the questions and will not restrain them. Also since the questions are sent in advance, they would have prepared to talk about the subject, so the best thing to do in data collection here is to listen, record and prompt if necessary.
