Raymond Lam also examines her relationship with Avalokiteshwara, the Buddha of compassion. Several legends speak of her birth from Avalokiteshwara. This is interesting in the sense that compassion is of utmost importance in both Mahayana School of Buddhism and Tantrayana. At her inception, Tara served as a companion to Avalokiteshwara, as someone embodying the principles of compassion. In other words, Tara did not embody compassion. She was a passive voice while he defined the norm (Wayman, 1959). His importance lay in the fact that it became imperative to call on him to call on her. To conclude, it is interesting to note that Tara Bodhisattva as a Tantric deity emerged out of the ashes of the usual power politics along the lines of gender. While powerful, she could be accessed only through Avalokiteshwara. Tantra worship itself seemed to accept androgyny as well as time progressed. In this way, Tara continued to be revered. She came to be known as the Mother of the Bodhisattvas guiding them through wisdom while appropriating compassion. This is interesting in the sense that while she grew above the usual fixed gender roles, there still remained some amount of restriction because of her gender. It becomes clear that her story has two distinct sides- that of assimilation, followed by reclamation, in order to gain Buddhahood and eventually becoming a Buddha.
