The VC is a communion of interests. Communion or communication is an essential point for a VC. Community interactions are necessary for the community to thrive. Elements of trust find their place of significance here, just as they do in any other normal social space.
“A VC consists of people who interact together socially on a technical platform. The community is built on a common interest, a common problem, or a common task of its members that is pursued on the basis of implicit and explicit codes of behaviour. The technical platform enables and supports the community’s interaction and helps to build trust and a common feeling among the members” (Leimeister et al., 2006, p.279)
Communion or communication is critical for a VC, as a VC is like any other public space even when it is focused on some special common interests. Presence and interaction must be felt within the VC. The problem that leads to the deterioration of many virtual communities is that there is a lack of communication or sense of interaction. For example, some of the VC such as that of Facebook exists purely on the communication context. Members within Facebook can ‘like’ one another’s posts. They work on identifying areas of common interest and posting their individual likes. They are given the ability to create communities of interaction. Similarly, LinkedIn also operates with communities of interaction. These communities or communions are so critical for the survival of a VC. A VC in its most logical sense is about creating a place of social interaction. When interaction is absent, then it signifies the demise of the VC.
Consider how LinkedIn creates communities of interaction as in the LinkedIn community at the most basic level, one on one interaction are created. People get to meet others who they know in a professional context. Some get to meet people they are not introduced to, but would like to know in a profession context. Recruiters interact with the networked pool to get introduced to an audience that they know would suit some current requirement.
