The prospect for moderate growth in wages is weighed on the forecasted estimates of nominal GDP. The expected growth in nominal GDP in 2016-17 is 4.25 percent from 2.5 in 2015-16, and is further projected to grow at 5 percent in 2017-18. The Australian federal budget lays out the government’s economic plan to ascertain the successful transition of Australia, from a boom in mining investments to a more diversified and stronger economy. This is expected to achieve in the three key ways. Firstly, by ensuring the successful implementation of the government plan for creation of jobs and growth of the economy, this can be achieved through a 10 year Tax Plan as suggested by Australian government that is expected to boost investment and support the creation of employment opportunities (Budget Measures, 2016). This would further require continued investment in the new start-up businesses, including National Innovation and Science Agenda. Also, new job opportunities are created in the export sector for manufacturers, producers and service providers in Australia. As a part of the ship building programme of Australian government, securing a developed manufacturing industry of defence, thus aiming to create 3600 new high-tech jobs in Australia.
The second focus of the government plan includes fixing problems in the existing tax system in order to ensure sustainable use of funds. This is expected to be achieved through combating avoidance of tax by the multinational corporations in Australia, to ensure that each party pays the tax on the amount they earn. It also requires closing off concessions on superannuation taxes for the wealthiest individuals in Australia, instead to work on building independent wealth after retirement for working Australians. Lastly, there is a need for the government to maintain a balance in its budget and to reduce the long-term debt burden (Budget Strategy, 2016). This can be achieved by ensuring that the government spending is efficient and well targeted. There is a need to ensure that the most vulnerable, and people with disability are covered under a safety net, thus targeting welfare abuse. In addition to this, there is a need to invest responsibly in infrastructure like public transport, rail, roads, dams etc., and guaranteeing affordable funding in education services and health services.
