Different engineering standards are applicable for decision making; in a similar way, there are many ethical theories based on which ethical decision making is done. For instance, ISO or ASME standards might exist for engineer processes and practices. A90 is the safety of system developed with respect to man lifts, etc. Similarly, in the case of ethical decision making, there are codes of ethics and professional conduct that people are expected to follow. For instance, consider the ACM code of ethics that exist for professionals.Health and safety related ethical dilemmas are one where it is necessary to consider perhaps quality of working or efficiency in the workplace as a tradeoff to health or work situation. Technology related dilemmas are those where the ethical dilemma in question might be introduced by the use of technology in the workplace. It could be an issue such as protection of privacy of the worker or it could be an issue of technology related safety, etc. Transparency in the workplace leads to ethical dilemmas as well.
For instance, transparency issues could result in less information sharing on with respect to finances such as that of inadequate financial disclosure. For the ethical dilemma of health and safety, it would be necessary to develop a plan similar to how engineering processes are created. The plan should consider all stakeholder input and should be made into a policy statement as such. In the context of technology related ethical dilemmas, it would be necessary to consider adequate standards to be followed to reduce ethical issues or breach. In the case of transparency in the workplace dilemma, once again policy producers have to be established clearly for reducing ethical dilemma decision points. As with the case of an engineering process where the end deliverable is checked against the initial requirements, it is also necessary to check the end decision making point against the stakeholder consequences. The ethical decision making and consequences because of the said decisions are usually conducted as analysis early on in the process.
