To have commitment to diversity is to learn new things, build new skills and work with different kinds of people. I should have a commitment to work in diverse situations where everything might not be under my direct control. I should be able to keep my calm and to take the situation as it is. I should work with different kinds of people with diverse backgrounds to gain more knowledge about dealing with them and then apply my experience to solve the real time diversity issues. I should not run away from situations which are new or are unsettling. I should have a commitment to face the situation as it is. I can develop and apply my commitment only after gaining experience of such situations. I can get the experience by putting myself in situations which would otherwise be uncomfortable and then using my knowledge and commitment to come out of that situation.

The most recent situation which I experienced was a road accident in which a person on the motorcycle got hit by a speeding van. It was a difficult situation and the person on the bike was injured badly. I instantly called 911 and asked for help. The ambulance arrived and we carried the person to the nearest hospital. It was a tense situation because the victim’s wife was also hit but she had minor injuries. The most difficult part was that of consoling the wife that the husband would be better even when the husband had blood all over. The hospital then admitted the person and took it forward from there. Looking back, I think that what I did was spontaneous and correct which was to call 911 right away. Since I was not able to help the person at that instant as I do not know anything regarding checking heart beat pulse rate etc., I keenly want to pursue nursing so that I equip myself to serve people in such traumatic situations.
