The author identified loneliness as “a chronic distress without redeeming features” (Cacioppo et al 2011). Loneliness is perceived social isolation. It is a people’s feeling of sadness or feeling disconnected from the environment around them, including individuals and society. In this light, loneliness could be a long period and likely to transit to mental health problem such as depression (Coyle & Dugan 2012). From this perspective, difference and links both exits between social isolation and loneliness. Isolation could also be identified as a factor to loneliness.
The senior members of the population are the demography that is often secluded from the society. This causes them to feel isolated and lonely. The reasons for the people to feel isolated and lonely are that the senior members are often living alone. They are physically alone and hence they feel alone as an organic reaction. The close proximity with the relations are found to be dwindling at this stage. The loss of spouse through death or divorce makes the seniors feel even more isolated form the mainstream community. The age factor gives chronic illness to some people or there are increased chances of disability. These cause the people to feel even more isolated even if their spouses are alive. They are mainly secluded from the mainstream society based on these analogies (Australia and Swan, 2010). Added to this, they have a different set of burdens.
These senior members are retired members of the community and they feel no real purpose of their life. They are not often outspoken owing to these issues and these cause more isolation for the people. There is stress and certain depression that the people develop in this demography causing them to feel even more isolated. They do not have any pressing civic obligations. These make them choose a different path.
These sensation of being alone can become detrimental to the people. They might develop a range of mental health conditions that could manifest as physical symptoms. There is a negative rhetoric that feeds itself and the senior start to feel the brunt of these issues.
