It is stated by the first things first manifesto in the year 2000 that consumerism is transforming in an uncontested manner. In other words, it says consumerism operates without competition. The manifesto further highlights that new perspectives such as design resources and visual languages should be introduced so that the brands compete to yield better quality.
Majority of consumers in the market prefer good designs that achieve comfort and security and also promote trustworthiness of the brand. For instance, Nike had introduced baseball caps after being successful in selling shoes. It was seen that the customers were loyal to Nike and brought baseball caps as they believe that the brand only manufactures/ delivers quality products. Design stands as a connection variable between the brand and the consumers. Mass media have the potential to attract large masses towards a particular brand. In such a case, it is highly essential for the mass media to deploy quality designs that are used friendly.
Due to the limited or no competition between brands in the market, graphic designers have begun to struggle for their livelihood. When design regulations are in place, brands can compete with each other to produce the best to the consumer. In the book titled “do good design”, it states few basic principles that empower consumerism and make brands to think innovative and interesting to satisfy the consumer. The skills of designers need to be used in such a way is that they share their opinions and also act in a realistic way. Consumerism is a global principle that influences the sustainability of a brand in the environment. The visible regulations of design tend to yield better outputs and advantages to the users.
The consumerism statement demands for expert knowledge and understanding of the subject. Consumerism is all about the protection of consumer interests through standard policies and procedures that are meant to protect them. The efforts taken by First things first are meant to rethink the role played by graphic designers in the society. Brands require endorsements of experts to ensure authority and credibility. It was only noticed that the social engagement has increased over the years due to the advancements in design procedures.
The concept of consumerism has a great demand for people/ designers who convey their needs and emotions in effective way. For instance, a product packaged with bright colours and attractive font has more likelihood to attract consumers than the other products. However, the consumers require these differences and competition for them to make choices. On the other hand, the design should also deliver information on package date, expiry date and date of manufacturing so that it can educate the consumers. The design thinking approach is likely to solve a number of business problems through trendy and clear designs. Three elements that influence consumerism include novelty, durability and adaptability. In order to create friendly environment for consumers, new infrastructures are created through the design projects to address environmental and social values.
