The significant others and the tattoos have the consideration of a category of a separate motivation from the family because of the prospect related to the distinction of romance (Guéguen, 2012). There was notification by the participants with respect to these meaningful individuals in their tattoo motivations. The relationships with the significant others can include creation of robust emotional bond with their partner.
There was detailed description by Kathy who tattooed multiple times for her husband: “I have tattooed on my arms the name of my husband. In fact, I tattooed it before we got married……it was after three months since we started dating. It is a big tattoo […] these things happens and […] and most importantly, I have done it because I am in love with him. My love is based on my trust for him. After my first big tattoo, I got another one….slightly smaller. It shows the lovebirds….my husband and I”.
Joan had similar reasons to tattoo. She designed it herself and developed into a tattoo. And all these were done only for her husband. She said, “I have a tattoo on my back. I started creating it from the time of my school days. The tattoos are symbols…..it’s a Capricorn and Taurus symbols […]. This is because my husband is a Capricorn and I am a Taurus. We believe in astrology…and this is the way we have been honoring our love and showing our unity. It’s a kind of unique thing….not the usual staff like drawing a heart on my….boob or something (entire group laughed). It is a nice way to show affection to my husband […]. To me, it means a lot”.
The tattoos that are related to the family have a common motivational tie. The tattooing was done having memoriam with personal loss. Kathy had tattoos for memoriam. She said, “It is an important tattoo for me.” Losing someone dear had strong connection emotionally, which was an important reason that Emily had a tattoo personalized. She said, “I lost my brother. I had this fear for a long time….I thought, I have to forget him…or something like that….part of me said…..he will always be with me”.
Lee mirrored the same point in mentioning his tattoo. “The tattoo reminds me of…..a family member of mine….who died”.
