The design of the method and instrument were one of the most critical parts of the research paper as it determines the scope and conclusive abilities of the research. Therefore, I initiated the process of writing the research methodology and developing the method and instrument by undertaking research about the different research methods, their impacts, benefits and disadvantages. This led me to explore the two research methods namely qualitative and quantitative. I learned that there lies a vast difference in both the research techniques. While the qualitative research is exploratory in nature, the quantitative research quantifies the problem in a numerical manner that is statistically explored.
I found that the qualitative research will be suitable for gaining understanding of the motivations, underlying reasons and different opinions. Therefore, it was found to be a more suitable approach to understand the extent to which media texts do not reflect the reality. While the quantitative approach would have offered insight about the interlink of variables realism, mediation and media text, the process would have become more time consuming and cost incurring without the entailment of responses from the individuals that are employed in the media organizations. Therefore, I decided to continue with the qualitative research method. During the data collection design, the challenge was to decide the structure of the interview. Hence, I focused the interview questions on the objectives of research to address the aim.
This was done with the data collection instrument of Likert scale for obtaining the responses from the participants. Furthermore, this rationale allowed me to utilize random sampling for the selection of the participants. 10 participants were selected to respond to the questionnaire through SurveyMonkey.com survey platform and email. The questionnaire was sent to the participants along with the declaration of their voluntary nature of involvement and ethical consideration along with their identity protection through anonymity.
