They are motivated to do so because they see it being done. This is a form of observational learning, this observational learning is useful as it enables the people to rehearse their behaviour in a symbolic manner as well and then enact it. They are able to code the model behaviour, and hence they get it right the first time they do it (Bandura, 1997). The activity we did suffers from that it’s not a social learning. We were not learning from viewing model behaviour nor were we given a template on how to model our learning, but rather we did what we thought was appropriate for completing the task using the guidance given by the instructors alone. So there were chances for our work to not be so perfect. If we were given some form of a template we might have done the work in a more practical manner, with lesser corrections etc, and this was missing in the work we did. However, there was also a benefit in working as such. Primarily, this form of working ensured that we did not have a template constraining us.

Most often in an educational setting people come from different backgrounds and as such have different strengths and weaknesses. Some students might be able to cope in a learning setting in a more traditional fashion while another might be able to cope in the working place only if they are allowed to work at their own pace. So giving them a model or a template to observe and work with would have its pros and cons. For the student, who is comfortable with the social norm in working on a task, the model would be beneficial as it will teach them the way to work easier. On the other hand, some students might find it difficult to conform and they might end up rehearsing the technique for learning the technique rather than using the technique as a tool for their learning which is its actual purpose. The actual purpose of the learning technique is hence lost. In this activity, we were allowed to develop our own more flexible methods for an exercise format.
