The process of employee motivation is related to the willingness of the employees to achieve the goals which are given by them. These goals may be given on the basis of the organizational goals so that they can satisfy the needs of the commercial firm. The need for the motivation theories is therefore related to ensure the commercial success of the organization by driving their employees. This kind of unsatisfied condition may lead to the situation of tensions. When the employees are motivated and their needs and the demand are fulfilled, they are able to contribute to the organization and its success. The motivation reduces their tensions and pressures and boosts a new wave of confidence within them.
According to the theory suggested by Bartol and Martin (1998), motivation is something which is a specific power which leads to the process of strengthening of the behaviors, desires and triggers the tendency of the people to continue. This directly explains that in order to achieve the specific targets, the employees in the organization needed to be motivated. In the views of Bedeian (1993), motivation is an internal factor which initiates either through a physiological want or the psychological need of the person. It is through motivation by which the performance of the person meets the organizational objective.
One of the most popular theories related to motivation of the employees is the ‘Expectancy theory of motivation’. It is the theory which emphasized on the relations between the expectancy and their fulfillment. Suggested by Vroom, this theory states the basic difference between the expectancies, performances and the outcomes. The theory realizes that the performance of the employee is based on the number of factors such as personality, skills, knowledge, experiences and the abilities. It states that the performance of the person is linked with the person’s motivation. Also the same can be very well applicable to the situations where the employees works in the organization and they expect a favorable outcome in the form of meeting of their personal requirements. This theory is also beneficial for the organizations as it helps them as it assists them to relate the rewards provided to the employees directly to the performance of the employees.
