According to the UN study, it has been found that UK ranked 24th out of the 29 countries for supporting the educational well-being of children. Another study, which is Children’s Worlds Report (2015), stated that England ranked 14th out of 15 countries in displaying over all happiness of children (Children’s Worlds Report, 2015). A report presented by Public Health England (2016) and supported by the Government of UK explores the mental well-being of children in London and found that more than 110,000 children in London are suffering from severe mental health problems. The report has also revealed that one in every four children in the country suffer from mental illness and receive treatment for it. The report shows that 40,000 children suffer from anxiety, 10,000 children have been found with diagnosable problem of depression, 19,000 children are found to be suffering from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and 68,000 children suffer from serious emotional and behavioural problems (Public Health England, 2016). The international comparison studies that were conducted to determine the mental well-being of the children, found that mental well-being of children in England/UK is ‘average’ or ‘below average’ (Unicef, 2013).

The rate of suicide, depression and anxiety among the teenagers in UK is also very high. This basically results due to the poor mental health in school years. The poor mental health of the children also reduces the life satisfaction and such children are also more likely to smoke, use illicit drugs and also alcohol abuse (Adamson, 2013). The children who face the mental health problems are more likely to suffer from poor physical health, low educational attainment, decreased employment and difficulties in forming and maintaining social relationships (Bradshaw et al., 2013). One of the report also stated that 10% of the children aged between 5-16 years are suffering from clinically significant mental health problem (Public Health England, 2016). Therefore, it can be said that problem is getting worse and level of depression, anxiety and mood disorders among children have increased in the last 5 years.

Therefore, the mental health problems among children are also affecting their academic development and result in long term consequences (Association of School & College Leaders, & National Children’s Bureau, 2016). The poor mental well-being of the children and young people affects the economy of the country. The economic cost of the increased prevalence of the mental health problems and emotional problems in children is very severe and very high. According to the reports, “NHS England estimates that poor mental health costs the economy, NHS and society £105 billion a year in England, – roughly the cost of the entire NHS” (Bentley, 2017, p. 4). The mental health problems in the school going age also increase the economic cost of mental health problems in young age. The estimated cost of mental health problems in young age is £1778 per person per year (Knapp et al., 2016). This has resulted in failure of NHS to meet the demand for the services.
