Second evidence about Sek-Lung being a marginal character was his health that made him an attraction throughout the story. He was born with a breathing problem and this problem stopped him in attending regular school. At times he had given evidences himself about his innocence in the story like “School Teacher has rejected my attempt to go to my school and get back in the class” (Choy 145). Also he stated his health issue by commenting “Everyone knew why I was brainless. A stubborn lung infection was keeping me out of the Vancouver public school system” (Choy 145).
Third evidence of Sek-Lung being a marginal character can be the attraction of Sek-Lung towards his grandmother can be taken in a sense that he was alone all the time as he felt third person at his home and at school. When she dies Sek-Lung feels alone and anxious, because she was the only one understanding his situation. When she dies Sek-Lung is out of control and his innocence can be depicted by the following dialogues. “These China town people always turn away and mutter behind my backs” (Choy 158).
After reviewing the novel it can be stated that Sek-Lung is always attracted with the local culture of Canada that make him feel positive about this culture more than his mother land. He wants to adopt the culture but his dieses and other issues stops him in doing so. His grandmother Poh is the only one who is helping him in struggling between the old and modern cultures. Sek-Lung is a marginal character because his innocence and truthful nature attracts the audience and his heart is full of joy and happiness that he wants to share with others but cannot because of cultural boundaries. His story has a motive that explains about emotions and silences that speak more than just words.
