Silva et al. (2012) identifies trust based on shared values, communication and opportunistic behaviour and Chen et al. (2014) analyses trust from dominant Confucian values, hierarchy and rationalism. Each of the authors identify variables based on the country that enters into the international venture (Chen et al, 2014; Silva et al, 2012)). Confucian values are drawn into discussion as china is one of the international country whose joint business ventures with businesses in United Kingdom are the focus of this discussion. Mohr (2004)’s research draws on some more variables based on the country involved. A general framework for understanding trust as a factor of its variables has not been presented before in research and this is the research gap that would be addressed in this research dissertation.
Based on identification of the research gap, the aim identified is slightly modified. The research aim was to explore the role of trust in interfirm relations of international businesses, in the context of joint ventures. Mohr (2004) presented in his research that there are multidimensional aspects to trust and hence it would be necessary to consider the impact of such aspects in a general trend. Now based on the multidimensional aspects of trust that could be tied up with other factors of the workplace such as productivity makes the exploration more complex and broad. The research aim will hence be to identify the constituents of a trust framework with respect to international joint business venture. Firstly, different constituents or themes of trust are identified from secondary research data. from secondary research. Secondly, these dimensions or themes are then used as basis to construct a questionnaire which would be presented to human resources managers in two or more international joint venture based out of the United Kingdom.
Main research objective and question is to empirically examine the role of trust in interfirm relations in IJV’s, and other research questions are
What are the different dimensions of trusts in IJV’s?
Will trust in interfirm relations be different from trust in normal organizational working, and how to understand such a difference conceptually?
What are the different frameworks or models available on trust in international workplace relations?
