Each food was used to symbolize a meaning. In the picture, Oyster points to the ephemeral nature of sensual desires. Mouse in the picture points towards the inevitable passage of time and how everything will eventually change in a passage of time. Lemon in the picture points to the sourness of life and to be careful. Plums points towards the richness in the society, it was a symbolization of loyalty according to the Christian traditions. Bread points towards Jesus. It says that in spite of all the wealth true wealth of God has been explained in the picture. Likewise, each element of the food is used to denote a specific element and sentiment. From a personal standpoint and as a member of the contemporary audience, it was felt that some elements of human copiousness and sentiments have been same from ancient times to the modern times. It also points to the fact that the superficial nature of wealth has been the main focus in the society from the 17th century to the modern times. The symbolization of the foods was not immediately understood, but after careful analysis and research the many elements that has been focused on by the artists makes sense. As a history student, it helped me understand that the painting is a symbolization of wealth. It pointed towards the wealth existing in the region.
I knew that the Dutch arts were a very strong movement during the time the painting was created. There were a number of elements in the painting that was construed to be reflecting upon some theme or ideology. Not all elements of the painting were immediately understood. To further research about the painting books were considered and it proved to give many insights about the artwork esp. the still life form. One of the valuable sources of information was obtained from Scheders “A still life” and from “Pots and Pans: Or, Studies in Still-life Painting” authored Arthur Edwin Bye. These two books gave a number of insightful information about the still life painting and about the art style used in the painting .From this painting, the pronk style of art was understood. The different element of the paintings was understood from the research efforts undertaken. The ostentatious nature of the wealth and the ephemeral nature of human are sensory desires, and the impending decay of life has been beautifully elucidated in the pictures. It also helps in understanding of the life of the people and the kind of life that the Dutch people lived during 17th century. This also instilled in me the need to understand about the arts and the life of the people living during those times. The symbolization of the pronk style is interesting and I will pursue in studying about the nuances of the representation of the arts.
