Then, based on the unconscious theory, Freud proposed three structural model of the psyche: Id, ego and super-ego. According to Ruth, S. (2006, pp. 105-107), the Id is the set of uncoordinated instinctual trends in this model of the psyche; the super-ego plays the critical and moralizing role; the ego is the organized and realistic part that mediates between the desires of the Id and the super-ego. In particular, the Id is the unorganized part of the personality structure which includes human’s instinctual drives. Id is the only component of personality that is presented from birth (Cherry, K., 2014).
Id is the sours needed by human’s bodily, the desires, impulses, and particularly the sexual and invasive drives. About ego, it is a rational part as the developmental portion of the Id. It must acts in accordance with the reality principle. According to Freud, S. (1986, p. 110), the ego “attempts to mediate between Id and reality, it is often obliged to cloak the unconscious. Unconscious commands the Id with its own preconscious rationalizations, to conceal the Id’s conflicts with reality, to profess … To be taking notice of reality even when the Id has remained rigid and unyielding’. Super-ego reflects the internalization of cultural rules, which is mainly taught by parents who apply their guidance and influence (Daniel, S., 2009, p. 481).
In Freud’s theory, the super-ego is a special psychical agency which can be called our “conscience”. In conclusion, the Id is inborn, while the ego and super-ego are given by the social rules and values. Especially, the super-ego forms from the family education and social environment. As a part of ego, it can make self assessment and moral control. Most part of the ego and super-ego have the characteristics of the preconscious and conscious, and the Id can be the representative of unconscious.
