Student’s money reduces the family relationship. When students make money for reducing financial burden, there is an sentiment by the parents that their children understand their issues. According to Nieman (2013), high school students drop owing to troubling family relationship. Most students and their parents do not have proper communication or understanding of the other person’s point of view. By addressing the financial issues, there is the intangible where the parents feel that their children understand the burden. As a result, students workong in the gap year are found to improve family relationship. Apart from this, the students who work in foreign locations or in a new workplace form newer social connections. Students understand the role of responsibility. Students who choose to take a gap year may take on new dimensions of responsibility and challenge. Tenser (2015) conducted qualitative interviews among 280 students regarding their gap years. It was found that all the students met some kinds of issues that made them gain greater awareness about interpersonal communication, serviceability, and independence.
Of the 280 students, 178 students overcome these challenges, 45 students elude these problems, and 57 students abandon these challenges (Tenser et al., 2015, p. 57).Hence the familial ties are strengthened along with forging newer friendships in this process. Apart from this, the students also gain other benefits. Students are found to gain more confidence and independence. According to the Nation Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) (2007), the research showed that 21% of students who graduate from high school, prefer to live with their parents owing to scarily of finance and general fear of the real world (Indiana University School of Education, 2015). A job is important growth stage for children to adult in the gap year. Research indicates a gap year abroad increases the challenge. There is also the learning of a new ability. These skills such as learning of language are learnt for primary survival of the students. In 1900s, many universities started exchange student programs. Some researchers claim that one year abroad is equivalent to give years of classes (Spenader, 2011, p. 386).
