Aristotle considered that music could affect the individual. Different forms of music were seen to make man accustomed to the right emotions. Having the right emotions would build a man’s character. Hence music built character. For instance in the context of a dirge type of music, music had to be melancholy. However, it also had to highlight aspects that would balance the person listening to it. They should be able to mourn and should also be motivated to continue on with their lives. Similarly other forms of music help them in abandonment, some helped bring more self-control, some curbed their enthusiasm and other increased it. Plato for instance states that music is a requisite for athletics and only in combining music which is feminist with the masculine strengths can athletes learn to temper their souls (Eaton, 2000). Hence they could truly become balanced and fair.
Plato further more contends that where there is no regulation, there could be moral anarchy and hence this means that music should also be regulated. Certain types of music were censored and some music was regulated by both Athens and Sparta. There were also warnings against some types of music (Eaton, 2000). The decline of regulation of music was argued to be the reason behind the decline of culture. Music became a purely aesthetic element and this author David Eaton states to be more apparent in contemporary culture.
