Movies are a form of entertainment which is often judged by the effect it has upon the audience and at times upon the group or the society. By most beliefs, the movies are produced with a commercial aspect keeping in mind the profit motive alone and are viewed for a strict entertainment value. The movie also serves as an aid to interact and create a social response with the audience. The purpose of this essay is to apply two different theories on a chosen film and to present an analytic discussion on the insights gained when analyzing the said movie with the perspectives. The movie selected is Van Helsing and the two theories selected are that ‘Feminist film theory and the uses of psychoanalysis’ and ‘From Passive to Active Audiences’ in fantasy movies. A specific character Anna Valerious is being selected here for analysis. The assignment aims to understand the character representation of Anna Valerious in the movie, through the two theories.
Van Helsing is a movie belonging to the horror fantasy genre. The fantasy elements in this movie are very intriguing it also has realistic morals and ethical implications in a real world context. The fantasy elements are beautifully pictured in the movie. The protagonist is Van Helsing; he is motivated to get rid of all evil entities in the world. He is pictured as a man who will stop at nothing to reach his ultimate mission. He is sent by the Vatican to kill all the evil vampires and monsters haunting the world and in the movie he is depicted to be sent by the Vatican to kill Count Dracula a monster and save the last of a clan.
