The film Curse of the Golden Flower (2006) was basically made in response to the reaction of those who believed that the director Zhang Yimou’s film, riding alone for thousand miles which was released in the year 2005. And also another movie, House of Flying Daggers (2004), were not up to the mark in comparison with the internationally acclaimed movie, Hero, which was released in the year 2004 (Rosenstone, 2000). With the release of curse of the golden flower, audiences were expecting a huge martial arts blockbuster form the director Zhang Yimou, this time around as reportedly the director Zhang Yimou was given the largest budget ever for a Chinese film. And after the movie’s release, one can easily say that the director Zhang Yimou directed an absolutely spectacular movie this time. The story of the film has been set in the 10th century, during the later tang dynasty. The film starts with the return of the prince jai who is basically the 2nd son of the royal family and he returns to his home just before the annual Chong yang festival, which was basically a kind of a celebration in the family gathering (Miller, 2013). Even though, the prince jai’s return from the military battle should have been a breath of fresh air in the royal family. However, it doesn’t really seem to be that way in the family as it should have been. And the major reason behind this was the mystery behind the raising illness of the empress (Marks, 2000).

Moreover, it was also about the agitation of the prince man who was basically the son of the emperor’s deceased first wife, and also about his embarrassing situation with Chen who was actually the daughter of the imperial physician (Lewis, 1996). And hence, he always demonstrates the fact that only the deserving one would be awarded his crown.
