An international manager is responsible for adjusting to more variables and environments apart from performing the basic functions of a domestic manager. For being a successful international leader, one must deal with in-country staffs and undertake global operations on behalf of the company. The aim of this paper is to review the relevant and scholarly literature on identifying the factors of being an international manager. This paper has elucidated the personal ability to be a successful international manager so that the personal strengths and weakness are identified. The critical reflection has been carried out by supporting concepts, theories, experiences and personality test results that helped to identify the areas of development.
This paper has suggested some ways and practical solutions through which the weaknesses could be developed.Finally, with the intention to pursue my career as a successful International Manager, as a prerequisite I must improve my overseas experiences by participating more in international projects and ventures. In this regard, I would have to focus on gathering different cultural knowledge either through the process of developing positive communication with my foreign teammates or would have to undergo a training session on different cultures and values of different countries. This initiative would definitely help me develop my learning skills which would further help to become a successful international manager in the future.
It can be concluded that there is a plethora of characteristics, abilities and factors that would influence a professional to be a successful international manager. On reviewing the journal articles and literature, some factors such as communication approach, global leadership traits and cultural diversity are identified to augment the opportunity of being an international leader. The critical reflection suggested some abilities and strengths such as effective teamwork skills, sensitive to cultural diversity, being a task motivator, delegating tasks and possessing strong written communication skills. However, some weaknesses have been identified such as effective oral communication skills, lack of time management skills and little knowledge of overseas experience. Consequently, some ways and practical solutions of overcoming these problems have been presented.
