In this paper, I describe the phenomenon of growing intolerance brewing among the Dutch population. The intolerance is primarily directed on the development of the anti-immigration sentiments of the general public, specifically the anti-Islam sentiment, where Muslims are the foremost community forming the bulk of the immigration population in Netherlands. The representation of such sentiments is evident with the growing status of the nationalist parties such as, Party for Freedom and Geert Wilders. The Party of Freedom shot into the limelight of Dutch politics with the increase in securing seats from fifteen to one hundred and fifty seats in the House of Representatives last year (Anderson, 1992). The exodus that followed the Arab Spring and made changes in the policies of European countries towards immigration corroborated this rise of intolerance amongst the Dutch voters. Having stated the reason for anti-immigration sentiments in Netherlands and other European countries, such as France, Denmark, and Germany, it must be noted that the underlying causes of this phenomenon are much more complicated. The scorns of the Dutch populations are not pointed towards Arab and sub-Saharan African immigrants, but more towards Turkish and the Moroccan immigrants that have been living in Netherlands for ages.

As of in 2010, the immigrants from Turkey and Morocco consisted of 44 percent of population that are non-European and non-western. The PVV and the Wilders’ support base are primarily made up of these immigrant haters, which has made it easy for the PVV and Wilders’ the leveraging of this recent Arab immigration imbroglio. The intolerance against Islam is not just in Netherlands, but also in the neighboring countries such as France. The terrible attack on Charlie Hebdo, and the French magazine office at Paris is an attack directly aimed at the freedom of speech. This means that the assault in Paris was a blow to the institution of democracy and its fundamentals. These incidents further bolstered the anti-Islam and the anti-immigration sentiments among the French people, just like it has been in other European countries (Anderson, 1991). The connotation of religion in the attack cannot be discarded as the gunmen shouted Allahu-Akbar when leaving.
