The whole movie depicted a balance in acting, script, direction, costumes and every peripheral. The beauty of Ivy Ho’s script lies in simplicity of the characters. It gave a feeling that the story belongs to common people like us. Nothing in the movie or in characters seems unrealistic or exaggerated. “If you do your job in the writing then the movie is almost done!” said Paul Thomas Anderson, and that is what Ivy Ho gave to Peter Chan. Though he got an incredible script but making it work all through is itself a challenge. His concentration and determination carried the movie to the greatness it achieved. Peter received Hong Kong Film Award and Hong Kong Film Critic Society Award for best direction in 1997. Leon and Maggie put best of their efforts to give success to Ivy Ho’s script and Peter’s direction, without which it was among impossibilities to mark the epitome of success. Maggie showed her appearance almost after two years, who played her last role in 1994 and Leon already possess charming personality traits that attracted whole lot of viewers. Both played amazingly well that their characters completely showed a distinction between two different natured mainlanders. The best of acting comes when actors feel the character instead of imitating, that’s what Maggie Cheung and Leon Lai did. They indulged themselves in characters of Li Qiao and Xian Jun that the beauty of Maggie and charm of Leon disappeared and the audience can only perceive two mainlanders from China. Maggie Cheung was given Best Actress Award in Hong Kong Film Awards 1997, Hong Kong Fil Critics Award 1997 and Taiwan Golden Horse Awards 1997. Leon Lai was nominated for Best Actor in Hong Kong Film Award 1997. Though the mainstream actor and actress did not allowed the focus of viewers to swing but the efforts of side actors is worth appreciating. Kristy Yeung and Eric Tsang played their roles extremely well and realistic. With the best of direction, script, actors and actresses, costume designs, cinematography and editing, the movie deserved the recognition it received in the genre of romance and drama. It’s a story of affection with real characters that Hong Kong should be proud of.
