Home Depot Inc is a retailer in home improvement, selling both internal and external amenities, related products, self construction kits and more. Installation programs come combined with services for flooring, cabinet installations, countertops, linoleum installation and more. It provides installations services for customers through third party contracting services which are more cost effective for consumers and also incorporates professional remodelers, repairmen and more as part of the extended services (Yahoo Finance, 2014).
The company as of 2015 has around 2,269 stores in the United States, Puerto Rico common wealth, the US Virgin Islands, international locations in Mexico and Canada (Yahoo Finance, 2014).
Home Depot was established in Atlanta, Georgia in the year 1978. The founders of Home Depot are Arthur Blank and Bernie Marcus. The visionary marketing leadership of Pat Farrah led to the establishment of do-it-yourself products in the Home Depot stores a year after its inception. This is a uniquely differentiated product strategy. Customer service was given significant importance at Home Depot from the inception. Associates working with the customers to guide them to the self use toolkits and products were trained to ensure that they had the adequate knowledge for guiding them. Customer training programs were also provided by the company. Home Depot had a revolutionary reach in the Home improvement industry. The customer bill of rights that Bernie and Arthur promise for Home Depot states that customer service works with a “whatever it takes” to satisfy customers attitude (Home Depot, 2015a).
These successful business practices led to Home Depot going public on NASDAQ in 1981 and opening its 100th store in 1989. The country later expanded by means of acquisition strategies to Canada and then to Mexico in 2001 and later extended to China as a store chain.
