Criminology studies in the United Kingdom attempt to analyse crime and poverty in a connected sense. To a greater extent, studies attempt to understand how crime and class are associated. Despite the many advances made in criminology, the reasons for crime are still understood at basic level. For instance, how monetary deficits at the country’s economic level or the individual level, contributes to crime situations is a question analysed for often. Despite the alleged connection of poverty and crime in Britain, there are not much widespread studies on the connection. Also, there is a lack of collated criminal statistics that can be understood as pinpointing to the fact that poor and socio-economically lower classes are the ones partaking in crime.

For instance, a proxy understanding of crime and poverty connections is identified, such as when the correctional system makes note of the employment status of individual during the time of their arrest. These form of identifications are being used to understand if individual situations contribute to crime (Hipp et al., 2011). So in this context, this research attempts to understand how the factor of income inequality has an effect on crime. The research now also attempts to understand how income inequality arises and in this point considers whether recession introduces income inequality. So then, the effect of recession and economy as a whole and its effect on crime is also critically analysed.
