According to the study of Chohaney (2014) “Romanies, or Gypsies, are an ethnic people of European descent comprising a loose collective of related and widely distributed groups and sub-groups who have successfully exploited a characteristic set of niche economies” (p. 32). Gypsies and Travelers are the people of Indian origin. These people have settled now all over the world.
In 9th century A.D. these people migrated from Indian sub-continent through two different paths. These people used the Central Asian route as well as the Northern African route to migrate from India to Europe. Gypsies are the denoted as the members of the wandering race and call themselves as Romany. One of the significant reasons that these people are discriminated is that the German term used for Gypsy is “Zigeuner” that means racially inferior or the ‘untouchable’.
These people are believed to appear in Europe in 16th century and that time they were believed to have migrated from Europe. These people have dark skin and black hair (Bradford, 2017). These people are mainly considered as financially independent. The American Romanies have found to be the self employed entrepreneurs and have focused on developing their economic niches (Chohaney, 2014). These people earned their living through making baskets, selling horses and also fortune telling. A significant aspect of the Gypsies and Travelers is that they are considered as nomads. The nomadic nature of living is the thing that makes them as the object of suspicion in front of the society (Kalantzis and Cope, 2016).
His ethnic group is highly discriminated and stereotyped due to their living style, culture and traditions. The nomadic nature of living is the main aspect of Gypsy living. There was the time when these people were continuously travelling and used to live in caravans. However, these people are now blended with the local people of America and most of them do not live in caravans now (Bradford, 2017). Travelling in their caravans had represented the sense of independence in them. However, now they do not travel that way, still their life style reflects independence. This independence is reflected in the way that there are still many Roma or Gypsy people, who opt for the occupation that allows them to travel frequently.
